Size 12 Prawn Tungsten Eggs

The "Prawn" earns its name from the warm, coppery translucence of a fresh egg backlit in the current — that amber glow trout key on when they're feeding with confidence. The slotted copper tungsten bead is doing double duty here: it gives the fly its signature color and its sink rate, punching through fast water to the bottom where the feeding happens.
These are tied on barbless jigged hooks, which is a meaningful upgrade for egg fishing. The jig orientation rides hook-point-up, so the fly snags bottom less and presents cleanly in rocky pocket water and along gravel bars — exactly where eggs do their best work. Fewer hang-ups, more drifts in the zone, and the barbless design means fast hook-ups and fish-friendly releases.
In size 12 the Prawn fishes as a substantial single egg, a strong pick for Great Lakes steelhead, tailwater browns shadowing spawners, and anywhere trout are locked onto the spawn. The copper tone is especially effective in slightly stained water and low light, where it glows without the hard flash of brighter beads.
Dead-drift it deep behind redds and along the soft inside seams, or run it as the point fly in a tandem rig — the jig hook's snag resistance makes it the ideal lead fly in rocky water. When the bottom is where the fish are, fish a fly built for the bottom.
